The intent of this section is to provide FP&C
personnel with some basic Information Technology (IT)
computing information comprised of "Tips & Tricks"
links, on-line tutorials and PowerPoint training slide shows related to various
computer hardware and software topics. You can also find valuable information about
current virus threats and internet
traffic.
We don't want to get too 'Geeky' but we do want to provide some basic
instructions for those personnel who are interested in
empowering themselves to be able to do more with their computers
with a view toward leveraging technology in order to be more
productive in the workplace.
We'll start with some basics and add to these pages as
issues come up and questions are asked. Please let
Kenn McDermott
know if there is a topic you would like
to see added to to the list on the left.
NOTE: WHEN LOGGING IN
TO ANY ITC SECURE WEB SITE you'll be challenged to
prove you are an authorized user. For example to use
OUTLOOK WEB ACCESS (OWA) to read, forward, reply & send your
e-mail, set your Out of Office Assistant, use your
calendar, access your Contact list, etc. - from
ANY web browser - like Internet
Explorer - from ANY computer without special
setups or plug-ins - you must first Log in with your
UVA COMPUTING ID & PASSWORD which are defined as follows:
-
UVA COMPUTING ID
(or possibly "Domain\User Name":
This is the 'front-end' of your e-mail address,
i.e. krm3k, which is everything just prior to
the @ sign. If a domain is asked for you'll need
to enter that. This ID is also used for your
Facilities Management (FM) domain and other logins,
including ITC'S NETBADGE WEB LOGIN.
-
PASSWORD: -
For OWA and NetBadge this is your Microsoft
Exchange Server E-Mail password which is unique
to your E-Mail and MAY not be the same as
your FM Domain login (which you use when you
turn your computer on), and MAY not be your
FM database password (that you use for Maximo,
Weekly Time or Web PIMS when away from the
office). This password cannot be saved inside of Outlook
so you'll have to enter it each time. For OWA
the top box would be "eservices\krm3k" for
example. Call Kenn if you need help with any of this.

As a point of interest when working with computers in
Facilities Management at the University of Virginia please
note this basic information:
- Facilities Management personnel use the University's
Information Technology and Communications (ITC)
Department's programs and servers for E-Mail and
Calendaring. Since FM personnel do not control the
operation of these systems our Computer Helpdesk can
only coordinate with ITC to set up accounts and check on
problems. These servers are located in Carruthers Hall.
- E-Mail: We use the MAPI e-mail protocol on
an
ITC Exchange Server. A feature of the
MAPI protocol is that all mail from the Exchange
Server
is saved on the server and NOT brought down to the
individual PC. There is a 2Gig size limit for
your Outlook account on the Exchange Server so
all users should consider setting up "Auto
Archive" in Outlook and also creating Personal
Folders folders which reside on the individual
PC. These are also good reasons for using
our E-Mail Archive Database (the 'Send to DB'
button in your Outlook client) for all E-Mail
that would be helpful to other FM personnel and
particularly when archiving project files.

- Calendaring: As of the end of 2007 we now
use the Calendar in Outlook, the data for which
is on the Exchange Server.
- Facilities Management does operate its own File Servers,
Print Servers, Database Servers and Web Servers, all of
which are located in the 'server room' in the Leake
Building at 575 Alderman Road.
