Main Heating
Plant Expansion

This design build project will modify all aspects of the
operation of the Main Heating Plant. When complete, the
project will result in a plant with more reliable
capacity, multi-fuel capability, compliance with the
current air quality regulations and capacity to serve
the future growth of the University.
The design-build team of Frank Lill and
Son of Webster, NY and Lutz, Daily, Brain of Overland
Park, KS started work in January of this year with a
completion deadline of March 2008. Assisting the
University are the firms of Burns and McDonnell
(Construction Manager) of Kansas City, KS and RMF
Engineering (Preliminary Design and Permitting) of
Baltimore, MD. A new air permit for the Main Heat Plant
was issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental
Quality in July.
Two new gas/oil boilers were delivered
September 10 by rail and are currently being installed.
They will be available for use in November and will
replace two unreliable boilers. Plant support equipment
is also being upgraded to support the new and renovated
boilers. Demolition of Boiler 1 will begin later this
year and construction of its replacement will begin next
year. Later phases upgrade existing Boilers 2 and 5,
pollution control equipment and coal handling systems
